Met Hans Klokgieter op de motor naar Ahoy, Rotterdam. We konden de motor voor de deur neerzetten en waren lekker vlot binnen. Waanzinnig om hier bij geweest te zijn, helaas was het geluid bovenin Ahoy niet geweldig. Vergeet nooit meer de duizenden aanstekers bij Stairway to Heaven.

Het is juni 1980. Led Zeppelin gaat voor het eerst sinds vijf jaar weer op wereldtoer en doet daarbij ook Nederland aan. Voor velen een bijzondere gebeurtenis. Voor mij, met m'n bijna achttien jaar nog niet zo. Deep Purple, Rainbow, Thin Lizzy en Black Sabbath waren meer mijn bandjes. Natuurlijk kende ik de Zeppelin-nummers als Whole Lotta Love, Stairway To Heaven, Rock'n Roll en Black Dog, maar de rest van hun repertoire beluisterde ik slechts op de lange avonden die ik doorbracht op de zolderkamer van een goede vriend. Hij had namelijk oudere broers. En die bezaten Led Zeppelin-lp's.Mijn favoriete band was het toen dus nog niet. Maar toch besloot ik, toen er door omstandigheden een kaartje over bleek, de onverwachte uitnodiging van een groepje wat oudere dorpsgenoten aan te nemen en mee te gaan naar het concert in Rotterdam. Led Zeppelin in Ahoy. Ik herinner me nog dat de speaker voorafgaande aan het concert de menigte opriep om straks toch vooral op de stoelen, die zelfs in de arena stonden, te blijven zitten. De man besefte zich, zo zei hij verder, terdege dat de muziek van Led Zeppelin daar niet bij uitstek geschikt voor was, maar op die manier zou iedereen het concert tenminste goed kunnen zien.
Wel, dat was natuurlijk tegen dovenmansoren gezegd. Want vanaf opener Train Kept A Rollin' stond Ahoy op zijn kop. In mijn beleving althans. Verder herinner ik me vooral het dramatisch slechte geluid, het feit dat Whole Lotta Love helaas niet werd gespeeld en Stairway To Heaven gelukkig wel en dat de band afsloot met Rock'n Roll, waarin de verder voor zijn doen tamelijk onopvallende drummer John Bonham toch nog even flink van leer trok. ,,Hij moest'', zo sprak één van mijn reisgenoten na afloop, ,,nog even laten zien dat die er wel was.'' Toen nog wel, ja. Want drie maanden later was Bonham dood. En Led Zeppelin ten einde.
Pas jaren later besefte ik me dat ik bij een min of meer historisch concert was geweest. En zeker toen ik Led Zeppelin en ook de soloplaten van met name zanger Robert Plant meer en meer ging waarderen, was ik blij dat ik op die 21e juni in 1980 in Ahoy was geweest. Ondanks het slechte geluid en de, achteraf gezien, wat ongeïnspireerde show van een band die z'n beste tijd gehad had. Later zag ik nog enkele soloconcerten van Robert Plant. Betere concerten, zoals die keer eind 1993 in Paradiso, waarbij hij eindelijk weer veel Led Zep-werk speelde. Ook Whole Lotta Love. Maar zelfs dat woog niet op tegen de gedachte dat ik in ieder geval de échte Led Zeppelin, misschien wel de beste rockband allertijden, toch ook live had gezien. Dat kon niemand me meer afnemen. A truly excellent and fiery show in front of a dull and restrained crowd. The band is really playing well, and even Jimmy is on near top form, playing with guts, cleanly and constructing exciting solos and his usual great guitar playing. Trampled Underfoot is a definite highlight, and the encore of Heartbreaker is blistering. Argenteum Astrum.

I was in high school. Took a lot of negotiating with parents, but I was allowed to go. Wild great time! Totally amazing! Shimon Sandler.
Was fortunate enough to be there for this one. Saw both Knebworth concerts but the Ahoy was a far better gig, they played a blinder. Sounded like they were up for it. Real energy and a good raw sound. I was 18 then and didn't mind the round trip from london. Buggered if I'd do that again. Alan Carter.

It was a Full House! We got in just in time. Tickets were mostly sold out, we managed to obtain cheap tickets at the time. There was a ot of black selling though, as one could notice, in those times. People just trying to push you their tickets, but we already had our offical tickets bought at the box office were we lived. We live in the middle of the Netherlands and drove to Rotterdam, got lost and first ended up in Den Haag! My band drummer was the driver, and HOW! But, as I mentioned, we got there in time to see and experienced the whole grand concert! Even Adje van den Berg, was wandering in the center arena.[Thanks to Page, he managed to produce his/there - Van Den Berg - album!] Even made some great shots, with tele lens at the time. Excellent they came out. Always excellent rememberance of the concert, they are. The Crowd really went wild! So did we. We sat at the right of the stage, upward. But had an excellent viewing point on the whole concert, even though we did not hear the sound as it should be. But still, it sounded great! Jimmy, Robert, John Paul and John...at their best. I am still very glad I had this oppertunity to experience BONZO - John Bonham - before his decease a short time later, alas. Have some great shots of him. They ended with Rock'n Roll, I think and that thore down the building, so-to-speak! The whole hall went wild. I could not even sit still either, I must say! Well, after a couple of beers...you do get into the mood! To bad it had to end. But am content and will cherish this concert for ever! Thank you Jimmy, Robert, John Paul and dear Bonzo! The band begins with a brief soundcheck before Page tears into the opening chords of Train Kept a Rollin'. Plant barks aggressively through Nobody's Fault But Mine. Page blazes through an excellent guitar solo. The band pummels the crowd with a devastatingly heavy Black Dog. Page shreds through a frenzied guitar solo near the end of In the Evening. As the song ends, Plant announces "thank you most kindly," joking "the main group will be on shortly." Someone in the crowd can be heard shouting "Moby Dick!" following The Rain Song, to which Plant responds "Bonzo can't do that anymore".
Trampled Underfoot is a brutal assault. Page shreds wildly through a blistering guitar solo. An outstanding performance, one of the best in recent memory. Since I've Been Loving You features a violently emotional guitar solo. Page achieves some particularly beautiful passages during an occasionally sticky-fingered White Summer/Black Mountain Side. Plant delivers a strong performance during Kashmir, belting out each line with power and conviction. The crowd erupts as Stairway to Heaven begins. Plant sings "I keep changin' and changin' and changin'... but I keep comin' back!" following the fifth verse. Page's fingers are a bit sticky as he blazes through an echo-heavy guitar solo. His guitar cuts out briefly during the second verse of Rock and Roll. The band closes the show with a frenzied Heartbreaker. Plant pushes his voice to the limit during the final verse. Another excellent performance.
